形似鱸魚,但肉質略粗糙,體色發暗,灰褐并帶有紫綠色,腹部灰白。背鰭鰭棘上緣黑色,鰭條部中央有一縱行黑色條紋。胸鰭腋部上方有一晴斑。其余各鰭灰黑色。米魚體形為兩側扁平向后延長狀,背、腹部淺弧形。魚鰾可制魚膠,有較高的藥用價值;魚鱗可制鱗膠;內臟、骨可制魚粉、魚油。
